Why Does the Rule of Thirds Work for Us?
STYLE TIPS
We talk about proportions and the Rule of Thirds a lot when it comes to our design process and offering styling tips– but what do we mean? Here's the breakdown of what the Rule of Thirds is and what it looks like in action:
Finding Balance & Harmony
Our brains are wired to find balance and harmony in what we see. When something is evenly split into halves (50/50 proportions), it can feel static or boxy. But when we divide something into thirds, it creates a sense of movement, balance, and flow that’s naturally more pleasing to the eye.
This concept is used everywhere.

In art & photography
Artists and photographers position subjects off-center to make images feel dynamic.

In film & media
Directors frame shots using the Rule of Thirds to make scenes feel visually interesting.

In architecture & design
Buildings, furniture, and even nature (like shells and flowers) follow similar rules.

& In fashion
"Fashion is architecture; it's a matter of proportions."

A Key Styling Tip for Petites
How It Translates to Fashion
When you apply this principle to styling outfits, the same thing happens! Our eyes naturally break the body into sections, and when those sections follow a⅓ to ⅔ ratio, it looks more elongated and balanced—especially important for petites who want to create the illusion of height.

Layering with the right lengths.
TIP #1
Layering isn't just about adding more clothes–it's a smart styling tool that helps you define your shape, play with proportions, and feel more confident in your outfit.
And don’t worry—it doesn’t have to be bulky or complicated. We design pieces specifically to layer beautifully on shorter frames.
Why It Works
Instead of splitting your outfit in half (which can visually shorten you), we style in thirds—placing emphasis at the right spot to make your legs look longer and your shape more defined.
- Want to look taller? Start with a cover up with a shorter hem in the front. This will help define your waist, elongating your legs.
- Want to slim your hips? Try a longer jacket over your base.

following the rule of thirds

Tucking in your top or wearing a shorter top.
TIP #2
Instead of splitting your outfit in half (which can visually "cut you off), try a shorter top. This keeps your top ⅓ + bottom ⅔, making your legs look longer.
Any top can achieve the ⅓ proportion if you try the half tuck, but we also design tops to give you the same effect without the extra step.

Choosing pants with a higher rise.
TIP #3
When paired with a shorter top, it defines your waist, and then extends your lower half, giving you a leg lengthening effect.
And, our higher waisted pants actively combat muffin top– it's a win win. Longer looking legs and no uncomfortable squeezing!
